Lister FAQs


NOTE: Australian boat owners will be required by law to register their boats from 1 July 2018
The Australian Maritime and Safety Authority  (AMSA) will administer a national registry from 1 July 2018 requiring all boat owners to apply for a unique vessel identifier where a monetary transaction occurs that allows another person to use the boat, such as on Kayakable. You can stay up to date by checking out the AMSA news page closer to the date.
How do I sign up?
Just click on the ‘SIGN UP/LOG IN’ button at the top of the screen. After you receive a confirmation email, you should log in and select ‘Profile’ to add your personal or business details, and ‘Settings > Payments’ to link to your PayPal or Stripe account (this is the account you will use to receive your payments),  and save your information.

It’s also a good idea to click on ‘Settings > Notifications’ to customise your booking and Kayakable alert preferences.

Finally, please note that when you join, you will be required to accept our Rental Agreement and Terms of Service in order to create an account.

Can anyone join?
Anyone can join! It doesn’t matter whether you’re an individual or a business. But we continually monitor reviews, transactions and listings in order to maintain legitimacy and trust within the Kayakable community. It may be that we have to weed out the occasional bad apple now and again.
How do I add a listing?
Click on ‘Add Listing’ on the top of the screen and log in as a Kayakable Lister. Once you have successfully on-boarded as a lister, click on ‘Select listing type’ to add a boat, tour or lessons listing. Fill out all the required fields such as title, price, description and image/s. Once you are happy with your listing, click on ‘Save listing’ and your listing will be published.
Does it cost me anything to list on Kayakable?
No, listing with us is completely free! Kayakable only gets paid when you do. When you approve a request and the Renter pays for the booking, we take a 15% administrative fee from the overall booking cost. For example, if you charge $40 per day to rent out your boat, we hold $6 from the rental. This allows us to continue to promote and market your listings and to also support our individual (non-commercial) Listers with our Kayakable Guarantee.
I'm a business. Can I add a link to my website?
Yes, you are allowed to add a link in your profile information to the home page of your website. You might also want to use your business logo as your profile image.
How much should I charge to rent out a boat?
Your price will vary depending on the type of boat you are renting out, and where and when you are renting it. Holiday seasons and locations will likely have an impact. Look too at what others are doing on the site.

Based on a variety of online info, the following might be a good starting point for a single plastic kayak or canoe:

  • $25/hour
  • $50/half day
  • $80/full day
  • $190/week

You should consider charging for any of your included accessories.

You might also choose to charge an additional cost to provide the option of a drop-off and pick-up service.

In the end, though, you should charge whatever makes it worthwhile for you.

Should I add accessories to a booking?
The decision is yours, but it could make the booking more attractive. If you add accessories to the booking (like PFD jackets or bilge pumps), you have the option of including these at extra cost each, offering them for free, or including them in the overall booking fee.
What if I can only rent out my boat, or offer a tour or lessons, on particular days?
No problem! We have an availability calendar where you can mark off the times you or your paddling experience is unavailable.

In the case of a boat, if it’s listed as available, Renters can request and contact you whenever they want to reserve your boat. If a request is not convenient for you, you can always decline a request without regret. If you know your boat won’t be available for rent or you won’t be able to respond to requests for several days at a time, you can temporarily hide it from the marketplace using the ‘Close listing’ feature.

How do I keep track of my bookings?
You will receive notifications of booking requests by email. You can also access everything in your ‘dashboard’ after you log in to Kayakable, including your messages. 
How do I communicate with the Renter?
You’ll be able to arrange things easily with the person looking to rent from you using our online chat messaging system.
What's the arrangement for picking up and dropping off boats?
Feel free to organise a time and place between yourselves using our messaging system. You will be able to add pick-up and drop-off options to your boat description.
Can I list the same boat with different pick-up locations?
Yes! You can certainly list the same boat in different locations. For example, you might want to create a listing at your home and add an additional listing near your work in case a Renter wants to pick the boat up from there.
Can I list my items in another currency?
No, unfortunately not. The current default currency on Kayakable is AUD, and we do not accept any other currencies at this point in time. You need to set up your PayPal or Stripe account in Australia and configure the currency as AUD. If not, you might incur additional charges arising from foreign exchange differences between AUD and the currency in your PayPal / Stripe account.
Why was my listing closed?
We close your listing after three reservation requests have come and gone without a login or response from you. Listers who don’t reply to requests hurt not only us but themselves as well, because it takes away from their listing credibility. If your listing was closed and you decide to relist, simply log in and reopen the listing.
How do I edit my information?
Once you are logged in, click on ‘Manage listings’ to access all your items. Choose the items you want to edit, and click on the pencil icon. The listing description will pop up for editing. Once you are happy with the new details, click on ‘Save listing’.
Can I add or change my pick-up locations?
Yes, you can definitely do that. If you add more than one pick-up location, your Renter has the choice of selecting their preferred option when booking a boat from you. You can always add more pick-up locations in the description field for your listing.
How and when do I receive payment?
Whether you use PayPal or Stripe, your payment provider will automatically credit any payment directly to your PayPal or Stripe account after every successful transaction.
Can I accept cash for a rental?
No, you cannot accept cash from the Renter. All payments need to be made via credit card since they give us a valid form of verification. In the case of boat rentals, you will not be covered under our Rental Agreement and Terms of Service if the transaction does not happen through our website.
